Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Makes Three Race Swing This Weekend

WAYCROSS, GA (June 17, 2013) – Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will make a three race swing this weekend, competing in three different states. With stops in Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia, all three LOLMDS events this weekend will include Hot-Laps, RED BUCK Time Trials, Heat Races, B- Mains and a 50-Lap feature event paying $10,000 to win and $800 to start. Thursday night, June 20th the series will roll into Swainsboro, GA and compete at the Paul Purvis promoted Swainsboro Raceway. The Aarons Crate Late Models will run as a support class with the LOLMDS at Swainsboro Raceway. Then on Friday night, June 21st the series will compete at the Lennie Bluff promoted Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, SC for the 15th Annual Gassy Smith Memorial. Support classes at Cherokee Speedway include: Crate Late Models, Limited Sportsman, Young Guns, Crate Sportsman and Stock 4. Then on Saturday night, June 22nd the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will roll into the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and compete at the Fred Brown promoted Wythe Raceway in Rural Retreat, VA for the “Blue Ridge 50”. Support classes at Wythe Raceway include: Modifieds, U-Cars, Super Street, Mini Stocks and U-Cars 2’s.

The last time the LOLMDS visited Swainsboro Raceway, regional hot shoe Casey Roberts of Toccoa, GA won the event in 2009, beating the series stars in front of a huge crowd. Steve Francis of Ashland KY won the 2012 Grassy Smith Memorial at Cherokee Speedway. This annual event is in honor of the late Clarence "Grassy" Smith, who is known throughout the racing industry for his contributions to motorsports. Grassy Smith is the father of Hall of Fame Racer Freddy Smith of Seymour, TN and grandfather of racer and car builder Jeff Smith of Dallas, NC. John Blankenship of Williamson, WV won last year’s exciting “Blue Ridge 50” from the 14th starting position at Wythe Raceway. Blankenship is the hottest driver on the series in 2013, winning two out of the past four sanctioned events and moving into 2nd place in the series national championship points standings. Owens will again be displaying the Keyser Manufacturing Day-Glo-Orange spoiler as the series point leader while holding a slim 120 point lead over John Blankenship of Williamson, WV in the series championship points standings. Billy Moyer Jr. of Batesville, AR leads the JRi Shocks Rookie of the Year – Presented by Dunn-Benson Ford points standings.

Mike Marlar Magnificent in Winning Clash at the Mag Saturday

COLUMBUS, MS (June 15, 2013) – Mike Marlar overtook race leader, Don O'Neal with nine laps to go to take the $20,000 to win "Clash at the Mag" Presented by the Columbus Convention and Visitors Bureau on Saturday Night at Magnolia Motor Speedway. Marlar's first Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of the season was hard earned as a caution with 12 laps to go set up a great finish.

Marlar, in his first weekend piloting a Bloomquist Race Car led to the checkers holding off O'Neal and John Blankenship for his fifth career LOLMDS victory. Point's leader, Jimmy Owens, who started 12th, came home in fourth followed by 17th starting, Randy Weaver.

"When I saw the caution come out, I got down in some dry dirt on the bottom of the track, and then I had to clean my tires off really good for the restart," said Marlar. "It was good to have one more shot at it there at the end, I lined up beside Blankenship for the restart, and my car took off really well up top, and it only took us a few laps to get by O'Neal. They had an awesome race track here tonight, we have always enjoyed coming down here to Mississippi to race, and they have a lot of great fans here."

"I really wish Norman Bryson could've be here tonight! He is on a mission trip in Honduras. I am still getting used to this new car, it turns differently than what I am used to driving. I also want to thank the Lucas Oil Series for the tire rule this weekend, we've finally gotten used to it. It saved us a bunch of money to come down here."

O'Neal looked like the car to beat all night as he withstood challenges from Marlar and Blankenship for the first half of the race. O'Neal who won this race last year was trying to end a streak of bad luck in the LOLMDS where he had not finished the last two events. The caution with 12 laps remaining while O'Neal had built up a good lead over Blankenship and Marlar set up a finish that O'Neal did not want to see.

"No we didn't need that caution, our car was good all weekend, to run 100 laps here tonight, we thought tire wear was going to be a factor, but it was not, congrats to Mikey on the win, the way the last few weeks had went we needed a good finish and we got it," said the driver of the Optima Batteries/MasterSbilt House Car Chevrolet.

Blankenship, who continues to cut into Jimmy Owen's point's leader, had another solid finish. ""We didn't need that caution either, we were slowly catching Don, I don't know if I could have ever passed though, the track was real racy all night, my car was better on the bottom, his (O'Neal) car was better getting into the corners, we were a tick better off the turns, it would have been real interesting in those final laps if not for the caution," said the driver of the Coal World's Energy, Rocket Chassis.

Completing the top ten were Billy Moyer, Jared Landers, Billy Moyer, Jr., Chris Wall and Steve Francis.

In preliminary action, Don O'Neal set the overall time (Group A) amongst the 46 entrants, with a lap of 14.077 seconds. Steve Francis set the fastest time in Group B with a time of 14.223 seconds. Don O'Neal, David Breazeale, John Blankenship, and Mike Marlar won their respective heat races. Randy Weaver and Eric Cooley won their respective B-Mains.

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will be making three stops next weekend, beginning on Thursday, June 20th, at Swainsboro Raceway in Swainsboro, GA. On Friday, June 21st, the series will make its only stop in the Carolinas at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, SC. Breazeale and O’Neal on Front Row for Saturday Nights Clash at the Mag

COLUMBUS, MS (June 14, 2013) – David Breazeale and Don O’Neal will start on the front row Saturday Night for the $20,000 to win “Clash at the Mag” at Magnolia Motor Speedway. Mike Marlar and John Blankenship were also heat race winners will start in the second row for the 100-lap main event. The four heat race winners redrew for their starting spots after the completion of the night’s race program.

Defending race winner, O’Neal, was the RED BUCK fastest qualifier amongst the 46 entrants. He took the lead at the start of the first heat and fought off an early race challenge from Jared Landers. O’Neal pulled away from Landers in the last half of the 10-lap event to take the win. He drove the Optima Batteries/MasterSbilt House Car. Landers took second followed by Billy Moyer, Jr. and Brian Rickman. Rickman’s brother Rick was running in the fourth and final transfer spot when he lost an engine near the end of the race.

The second heat was a tight battle throughout the entire10 laps, between David Breazeale and Chris Wall. The two drivers ran door to door with Wall pulling even with Breazeale several times during the race. Wall tried one last effort coming off of turn four on the final lap, but fell just short of the win. Breazeale was driving the L&D Trucking, MasterSbilt Chevrolet. Hall of Famer, Billy Moyer withstood a race-long, side-by-side duel with fellow Arkansas driver, Jack Sullivan to grab the third spot.

John Blankenship, who has won two out of the last three Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series events, kept Steve Francis at bay the entire 10 laps of heat number three in the Coal World’s Energy, Rocket Chassis Chevrolet to win the heat. Francis stayed close for most of the race, closing the gap on Blankenship near the end of the 10-lap event. Scott Bloomquist came home third followed by Bub McCool, who was guest driving in one of Leon Henderson’s cars.

The fourth and final heat saw Mike Marlar, driving a Bloomquist Race Car take the lead at the start and win going away. It was the first race for Marlar in a Bloomquist car that was just recently purchased from John Blankenship. Earl Pearson Jr. took the second spot followed by current points leader Jimmy Owens and Eddie Carrier, Jr., who was making his first-ever appearance at the track.
