Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Regular Don O’Neal Captures Eldora Dream XVII; Cherokee and Wythe Up Next for Series

WAYCROSS, GA (June 15, 2011) – Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series driver, Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN captured the Dirt Late Model Dream XVII at Eldora (OH) Speedway on Saturday Night. The event has the biggest first place prize in dirt late model racing. By winning the race, O’Neal and the MasterSbilt team took home $100,000 for the victory.
O’Neal started 12th and took the lead on lap 87 from Hall of Famer Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR, then he marched to victory lane for the win. O’Neal drives the Magnaflow Exhaust Products, Jay Dickens powered MasterSbilt Chevrolet is currently third in the series point’s standings heading into this weekend’s racing action.
“Congratulations to Don O’Neal, Tader Masters, Cody Mahoney, and the rest of the MasterSbilt team,” said LOLMDS Director, Ritchie Lewis. “He’s been so close before to winning a crown jewel race, it’s great that he was finally able to get that elusive win,” said Lewis.
O’Neal was among seven Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series regulars to break into the starting lineup at Eldora this past Saturday Night. Two-time series champion, Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN; Jared Landers of Batesville, AR; Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN; Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, GA; Bub McCool of Vicksburg, MS; and Frank Heckenast Jr of Frankfort, IL all made the race.
The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Quarter Master Rookie of the Year points’ leader, Jared Landers, set a new track record in qualifying with a lap of 14.922 seconds. He and Owens were the two fastest qualifiers among the 91 entrants on hand.
Owens leads the Lucas Oil Championship Points standings heading into the events at Cherokee (SC) Speedway and Wythe (VA) Raceway on Friday June 17th and Saturday June 18th. He leads Bloomquist, O’Neal, Steve Francis of Ashland, KY; and Landers in the championship point’s standings.
A reminder that the 19th Annual DART Show-Me 100 will air on the CBS Sports Spectacular this Sunday, June 19th at 5 PM Eastern. The event is produced by Lucas Oil Studios and will be the first dirt late model event ever broadcast on a major television network.
